Engineering
Information about the activities we regulate that involve the building or engineering works in inland surface waters or wetlands, or in the vicinity of these waters, which have or are likely to have an impact on the water environment and the authorisation you’ll need to carry on each activity.
Bank works
Bank works includes any works affecting the bank (between the bank top and bank toe) of any watercourse or loch, such as: bank protection, bank reprofiling, embankments, floodwalls, outfalls and intakes, steps and ramps etc.
Channel modifications
Activities that involve channel modification of a watercourse such as realignment, diversion and resectioning.
Crossings
Activities that involve the the installation of a crossing to a watercourse or loch, such as bridges, culverts, pipe and cable crtossings , ford and casueways.
Engineering in the vicinity, beyond the vicinity and affecting wetlands

Instream or in-loch structures
Activities that involve instream or in-loch structures or placement of boulders in a water course. This includes activities such as bed reinforcement, flow deflectors, croys and groynes, marinas, jetties, platforms, boulder placements and the placement of large wood.
Maintenance, replacement or removal of existing structures
Activities that involve maintenance, replacement or removal of existing structures (excluding impoundments) in or in the vicinity of inland waters.

Find out about the General Binding Rule (GBR 9) that applies to the operation of vehicles, plant or machinery in or near any surface water.
Sediment management
Activities that involve sediment management, such as sediment removal, dredging, sediment addition, sediment reintroduction and manipulation.
