Loch Ness tyres

Date published: 29 January 2024

Environmental incident

SEPA are aware of a quantity of tyres disposed of on the shore of Loch Ness.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) said:

"On Monday 29th January, we were made aware by the Ness District Salmon Fisheries Board of a large quantity of tyres disposed of on the banks of Loch Ness near Drumnadrochit.

"A Highland Council officer has attended the site and enquiries are ongoing. SEPA are investigating the incident together with the Council, which has its own plans in place for the safe removal of the tyres. We will continue to liaise with partners until this is complete.

"To report any suspicious activity, members of the public can contact SEPA 24/7 online at sepa.org.uk/report or by calling 0800 80 70 60.

"Members of the public can also check SEPA’s online database at sepa.org.uk/wastecarriers for registered waste carriers, to check that anyone they hire to move their waste is doing so with the correct authorisation."

Notes to editor:

Incidents of flytipping can be reported by contacting the relevant local authority directly. You can find details for the relevant local authority on the gov.uk website.

If the incident reported is ongoing, believed to be of a hazardous nature or is near a watercourse, the local authority may involve SEPA or Police Scotland in the investigation.

Waste criminals profit at the expense of legitimate businesses, undercutting them by not paying to deposit waste at approved disposal sites and competing unfairly. It often leads to illegal large scale chronic flytipping at industrial sites and rural locations. SEPA will work with partners, such as Police Scotland and local authorities to investigate large scale industrial flytipping in communities.
