Mossmorran and Braefoot Bay Complexes

Mossmorran is situated near Cowdenbeath, 20km north of Edinburgh. The Mossmorran complex consists of two neighbouring plants: the Fife Natural Gas Liquids (FNGL) Plant operated by Shell U.K. Limited and the Fife Ethylene Plant (FEP) operated by ExxonMobil Chemical Limited.

The Fife Ethylene Plant ceased operations in February 2026 and is currently being decommissioned. SEPA continue to regulate the plant, undertaking regular contact and inspections.

Community notice - Shell Fife NGL Plant - Site alarm test

The operator has shared the following community notice:

"As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, we are installing a new site alarm and will be carrying out a test this Friday 28th August 2026 at 3:00pm. As part of the test, residents in the surrounding area may hear an alarm sounding from the site for a short period. Please be assured that this is a planned test and does not indicate an emergency.

"The Fife NGL Plant routinely tests its site alarm system every Wednesday at 10am. This additional test is being carried out to verify the operation of the new alarm before it enters normal service.
