Treatment and storage of waste
Information about the storage of waste activities that we regulate and the authorisation you’ll need to carry on each activity.
Some activities are covered by Low risk waste activities position statements. Check this before making any applications.
If your activity needs an authorisation, but doesn’t meet the criteria of the registrations below, you will need a permit.
Storage and preparation of waste (not including WEEE) for reuse
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and prepare waste for reuse. This includes checking, cleaning and repair of waste items so they can be reused again, but does not include waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
Storage and treatment of less than or equal to 5 waste motor vehicles
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and treat waste motor vehicles at a small-scale de-pollution facility where no more than five waste motor vehicles can be stored on-site at any one time. This does not include waste electric and hybrid vehicles.
Storage and treatment of cooking oil less than or equal to 25m³
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and treat used cooking oil for the manufacture of biodiesel. Storage is limited to less than or equal to 25m³ of waste cooking oil at any one time.
Storage and treatment of waste at a water or wastewater treatment works
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and treat less than, or equal to, 100,000m³ of waste in a 12-month period within the boundary of a water treatment works or a wastewater treatment works (including the sludge treatment facility).
Storage and treatment of metal waste less than or equal to 10,000 tonnes
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and treat less than, or equal to, 10,000 tonnes of scrap metal at any one time. This can include smaller amounts of lead acid batteries and catalytic convertors.
Storage and treatment of wood waste less than or equal to 1,000 tonnes
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and treat less than or equal to 1,000 tonnes of segregated waste wood for recovery at any one time.
Segregated recyclable non-hazardous waste less than or equal to 500 tonnes
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and treat less than, or equal to, 500 tonnes of segregated non-hazardous waste for recycling at any one time. This does not include tyres, sorting of mixed wastes and activities where the Code of Practice on sampling and reporting at materials facilities applies.
Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) less than or equal to 35 tonnes
Find out about the registration authorisation you need to store and treat less than, or equal to, 35 tonnes of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) at any one time for the purposes of repairing, refurbishing, or dismantling.
