Information about the activities we regulate that involve the production, application or use of other solvents not referenced under schedule 23 and the authorisation you’ll need to carry on each activity.
Pre-treatment or dyeing textiles
Find out about the permit authorisation needed for the pre-treatment (operations such as washing, bleaching, mercerisation) or dyeing of textile fibres or textiles where the treatment capacity exceeds 10 tonnes per day. This is a Schedule 20 activity.
Surface coating using organic solvents
Find out about the permit authorisation needed to carry out the surface treatment of substances, objects or products using organic solvents, where the organic solvent consumption capacity of more than 150 kg per hour or more than 200 tonnes per year. This is a Schedule 20 activity.
Road vehicle respraying
Find out about the registration authorisation needed for the repainting or respraying road vehicles or parts of them where the organic solvent use is 2 tonnes or more in any 12-month period. This is a Schedule 26 activity.
Repainting or respraying aircraft or railway vehicles
Find out about the permit authorisation needed for the repainting or respraying aircraft or railway vehicles or parts of them if the activity may result in the release into the air of particulate matter or of any volatile organic compound. This is a Schedule 26 activity.
All other coating activities

Production of dyes and pigments (organic chemicals)
Find out about the permit authorisation needed for the production of organic chemicals for dyes and pigments. This is a Schedule 20 activity.
Manufacture of any coating material using organic solvents
Find out about the permit authorisation needed for the manufacture or formulation of any coating material (such as printing ink) likely to involve the use of 100 tonnes or more of organic solvents in any 12-month period. This is a Schedule 26 activity.
