Energy

Scotland’s energy system is built on both renewable and non-renewable sources. Energy plays a key role in Scotland’s journey toward a sustainable future, and it is transforming to help realise our climate change ambitions and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. The transformation to a thriving green economy will cut emissions while also benefiting Scotland’s people, workers and communities.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) plays a crucial role in managing the environmental impacts of Scotland’s energy system. We use our regulatory tools, experience, knowledge and partnership approach to help to protect the environment during the development, operation and decommissioning of electricity and heat production, transmission, storage and use.

SEPA applies its regulatory tools while working with developers, operators, and other stakeholders to ensure that energy projects deliver both environmental protection and sustainable growth.
