Industrial activities
Industrial activities can have significant environmental impacts, from emissions to waste generation. Under the Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations (EASR), these activities require authorisation to ensure they are carried out responsibly and in compliance with environmental standards. SEPA regulates these activities to protect Scotland’s environment and support sustainable economic growth.
Why regulation matters
Industrial processes can affect air, water, and land quality. Regulation ensures:
- Pollution prevention and control of emissions.
- Safe handling of chemicals and materials.
- Compliance with legal duties under EASR.
- Transparency and accountability for operators.
What's changing
From 1st November 2025, industrial activities previously regulated under Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) will transition to EASR. This creates a single, integrated framework for authorisations, making compliance simpler and more consistent.
