Chemicals and our environment
Chemicals play an intrinsic part in modern living and include pesticides, cleaning agents, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and plastics. The benefits of chemicals are significant, but there can be unintended environmental consequences of their manufacture, use and disposal. The effects of chemicals on ecosystems and human health will continue to pose significant challenges over the coming years.
There are many regulations covering the manufacture, marketing, importing, use and disposal of chemicals, often creating a complex regulatory landscape.
We have been working for some time to assess and reduce the environmental impacts of chemicals. Our role involves using our regulatory powers as well as working with Scottish Government, partners across the public sector, research institutions and industry to understand, monitor and reduce inputs of harmful chemicals into the environment.
