Nicole Paterson

Chief Executive

As a multi-award winning leader with nearly three decades of experience across local government, consultancy, and environmental leadership, Nicole is driving change in SEPA focused on the core purpose to protect and improve Scotland’s environment. Her leadership is rooted in collaboration, innovation, and a deep commitment to modern public services and service reform. She is steering SEPA to work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure an appropriate balance between environmental protection and sustainable economic growth. 

A Chartered Civil Engineer and graduate of the University of Strathclyde, Nicole is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Royal Society of Arts. She has led pioneering initiatives in climate change adaptation, biodiversity, flood risk management, transport policy, and green infrastructure, and contributed to major environmental initiatives. She continues to champion digital innovation, customer-focused service, and the Passion, Purpose, and Professionalism of SEPA’s people, ensuring Scotland’s environment and communities are protected for generations to come.
