Radioactive substances liaison groups

What are radioactive substances liaison groups?

Liaison groups support open communication between regulators, industry and specialist organisations involved in the management of radioactive substances. They provide structured forums to share information, discuss regulatory issues and plan for future developments in both the nuclear and non‑nuclear sectors.

What are their purpose?

The groups aim to:

  • support two‑way dialogue
  • identify regulatory or operational issues early
  • share updates on policy, legislation and regulatory initiatives
  • help regulators and industry plan for future changes
  • promote consistent, transparent regulation

How do they operate?

Both groups meet twice a year. Agendas focus on policy developments, regulatory updates, industry issues and opportunities for joint working. Meeting papers and minutes are published where appropriate.

The Nuclear Industry Environment Liaison Group (NIELG)

Together with the Environment Agency and Natural Resource Wales, we chair this group which meets twice a year to provide a forum for discussion between nuclear site operators and the UK environment agencies and other regulators.

The meetings cover topics such as forthcoming government policy, legislation and environment agencies’ initiatives. They provide two-way communication to help both the agencies and the operators plan for future changes to the industry and the way in which it is regulated.

The Scottish Non-Nuclear Industries Liaison Group (SNNILG)

We chair this group, which brings non-nuclear industries and other regulators together twice a year to raise any issues related to the regulation of radioactive substances, according to its terms of reference.

The group also consults with and informs non-nuclear industries on matters relating to the management of radioactive substances.
