Update 28th August 2026 - Advice against bathing at Saltcoats removed

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) have removed their precautionary advice against bathing at Saltcoats bathing water.
This follows confirmation from Scottish Water that there is no further issue at this site.
A spokesperson for SEPA said: “SEPA were made aware by a member of the public of a pollution incident at Saltcoats.
“Precautionary advice against bathing or paddling was in place, as investigations and work to resolve the issues were carried out. Scottish Water has confirmed that this work is now complete.
“Following visual checks of the beach and water sampling by SEPA officers, we have confirmed there is no current impact on water quality at Saltcoats. Signage will be removed by North Ayrshire Council and our website will return to making water quality predictions based on weather.”
24th August - Advice against bathing at Saltcoats
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) are investigating an ongoing pollution incident at Saltcoats linked to sewage.
Due to the potential impact on water quality, SEPA has requested North Ayrshire Council erect signage to advise against bathing.
A spokesperson for SEPA said:
“SEPA was made aware by a member of the public of a pollution incident at Saltcoats. Our officers have attended the location and confirmed that the pollution is ongoing.
“Investigations are now underway and we will work closely with North Ayrshire Council, Scottish Water and other public partners.
“Signage will continue to reflect the temporary guidance against paddling or bathing until SEPA are satisfied water quality is not being impacted.”
