Today (12th May 2026), the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) publishes its Annual Operating Plan for 2026-27 as the agency marks its 30th anniversary year.
Nicole Paterson, SEPA's Chief Executive, said:
“It is important to recognise the significant contribution the agency has made to protecting and improving Scotland’s environment and supporting communities across the country over the past three decades.
“While we have made huge progress, we know there is still more to do. Scotland’s environment is changing rapidly, and we continue to focus our work on our strategic priorities around net zero, climate resilience, water environment, resource efficiency and business environmental performance. Over the past year, we introduced major changes to environmental regulation through Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations (EASR), while continuing to strengthen our leadership, partnership working and engagement with businesses and communities.
“As we move into the final year of our current corporate plan, we will continue to deliver our ambitious transformation programme to modernise how we work, increase our resilience and ensure we continue delivering effective public services and best value for the people of Scotland.
“By continuing to adapt and innovate, we are positioning SEPA to meet future environmental challenges with confidence while maintaining momentum in protecting and improving Scotland’s environment now and in the future.”
