Update 10th April - SEPA response to fire at battery site in Kilwinning

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) have been part of the multi-agency response to the fire at the battery site in Kilwinning which began yesterday (Wednesday 9th April).
Our officers worked closely with the emergency services and other partners to provide technical and scientific advice, share their important public safety messaging and ensure that impacts on the environment from the incident were minimised as much as possible.
We understand and share the concerns of the local community. Since the previous fire in April 2024, we have been working proactively to secure the removal of this difficult waste type from the site to appropriately licenced facilities. That work is ongoing and we remain committed to finding a resolution.
We will continue to liaise with our partners following this latest incident and will explore any and all appropriate actions.
