From farmers facing water scarcity to communities devastated by flooding, there’s no doubt Scotland is experiencing the harsh reality of climate change.

Scottish inventions have revolutionised the world over and over again – and this spirit of innovation is needed just as much today as we face the realism of the climate emergency, and a narrowing window of opportunity to tackle it.

The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, published on 20 March, has been described by the secretary-general of the United Nations as a "survival guide for humanity". Its stark message is that human-caused climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every region across the globe.

From farmers facing water scarcity to communities devastated by flooding, there’s no doubt Scotland is experiencing the harsh reality of climate change.

But the report is also clear that options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change are available right now, requiring deep cuts to emissions to keep the average global temperature below 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

Scotland has already committed to achieving net zero by 2045, earlier than many other countries, and Scottish businesses have a vital role to play in succeeding in that goal.

The renowned VIBES Scottish Environment Business Awards recognise the vital contribution of companies from across the country that are leading the transition to a net zero emissions economy through innovation, partnerships, circular economy, adaptation and a commitment to making the environment a key factor in decision making.

Nicole Paterson, Chief Executive at SEPA, said:

“The IPCC’s latest report is clear that the window of opportunity to secure a sustainable future is rapidly closing and meaningful action is needed across all sectors. Thriving, successful and sustainable Scottish businesses will be those that recognise the link between environmental and economic prosperity. The great news is we have those in abundance and SEPA, along with partners, will continue to support them and showcase their success.

“The journey towards sustainability is a challenging but necessary one and I, like many others, have been encouraged and inspired by the commitment and action from VIBES winners over the years. So, I urge businesses big and small to showcase what makes you innovative, enter the 2023 VIBES Awards, inspire others to make the changes you have made, and show the world that Scotland is serious about securing a liveable and sustainable future for all.”

Businesses have until 5pm on 14 April 2023 to show how they are taking urgent action to halt the climate emergency. Submit a free application. Finalists will be announced in May before the annual awards ceremony in November.
