Grangemouth Petrochemical Complex

Activity: The Grangemouth oil refinery converts crude oil into petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oils through distillation and blending. It receives crude oil from FPS terminal or imports by ship/pipeline. The refinery supplies fuel to Scotland, Northern Ireland, and North-East England by road, rail, and ship.

Activity: ICGL operates plants in Grangemouth that produce ethylene, ethanol, polyethylene, and polypropylene from ethane recieved from the Ineos Forties Pipeline System or by ship. They distribute products through an ethylene pipeline or export by road tanker. They also manufacture ethanol by hydrating ethylene in a separate plant.

Activity: Ineos FPS Limited runs plants that produce crude oil and gas in the Grangemouth petrochemical complex. Crude oil from North Sea oil platforms is delivered via the Forties Pipeline System to the Kinneil terminal, where water and gas are separated. The stabilised crude oil is either stored on-site or exported to Dalmeny storage terminal and then shipped out of Hound Point. The separated gas is refined into gas products, and the ethane gas is sent to the adjacent ethylene cracker. Propane and butane are stored on-site as LPG before being exported by ship.

Activity: The unloading of petrol into stationary storage tanks. NuStar stores petroleum products and chemicals at their terminal within the Port of Grangemouth. As well as being inspected by the COMAH competent Authority under the Control of Major Accident Hazard (COMAH) regulations, the site hold a CAR authorisation for the storage and onward distribution of oil.
Under SEPA's Compliance Assessment Scheme, a significant number of lower risk activities are not assessed annually, and inspection frequency varies from once every two to once every five years.
