Special Waste Advisory Notes (SWAN)
Special Waste Advisory Notes (SWANs) clarify the procedures for consigning special (hazardous) waste. They also provide advice on the potential hazardous properties of certain waste types and how these wastes are classified under the European Waste Catalogue (EWC).
These notes are designed to:
- Help determine whether a waste is classified as special (hazardous) waste, particular where this is not fully covered in the joint agency guidance: Guidance on the classification and assessment of waste - Technical guidance WM3
- Support the preparation and completion of paperwork required when movie special (hazardous) waste, such as for multiple collections (carrier's rounds) and landed ships' waste. These notes complement SEPA's Guide to Consigning Special Waste (pdf 783kB)
