Update 3 July: Environmental incident at Greengairs Landfill Site
Date published: 03 July 2024
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) continue to work with the site operator following a fire at Greengairs Landfill Site, North Lanarkshire, which began on 29 June 2024.
SEPA continue to liaise with partners and the operator in response to a fire at Greengairs Landfill Site, Meikle Drumgray Road, Airdrie.
The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed on Tuesday (2 July) fire crews were no longer in attendance. Advice to nearby residents and those in the east of Scotland to keep windows and doors closed has been lifted.
The site currently remains closed while the operator takes steps to confirm that the fire has been extinguished and that they can safely and compliantly resume operations.
A SEPA spokesperson said:
“SEPA officers have attended the site and continue to work with the operator and monitor the situation closely. Our priority is to ensure that the fire is fully extinguished and that there has been no damage to critical site infrastructure before operations recommence.
“We are satisfied the operator is taking reasonable actions to address the incident. The operator will be required to submit a full report to SEPA in due course and officers will follow up any regulatory actions as required.
“Members of the public can report environmental impacts online."
